This was written on the "RSO run outs with Jeffrey Straker" May of 2010.
This is written in a farily conservative classical style,
but no pitches are specified. They are free! (except the timpani).
I have had much success with this free style and feel that it is a terrific way to introduce young people to the joys of playing in a group and reading music, but not being very proficient on thiere instruments yet.
Early march 2023: Mr. Burdick is preparing to start the difficult process of getting his:
Symphony No. Free (Three), Opus 168
typeset and recorded. He is just tying up a pile of "loose-ends" like a few CD releases and pulishing a few pieces of sheet music. He hopes to have this done by the end of April.
The Regina Symphony Chamber Players performed "Workers Union" by Louis Andriessen, which a work for unspecified loud instruments that play the rhythms together, but the choice of pitch is free.
This performance reminded Mr. Burdick that he has not completed the final copy of his Symphony (from 2010.)
Richard work is similar with mostly unspecified pitches:
This is a weird one folks, It was written 13 years ago, not the beautiful stuff I am trying to write today. This give the performer a freedom to play any tone they want . . . these are fun to play, but the outcome is avant-guard-sounding. The other three movements will be copied and recorded someday . . .these are actually really good for young performers to learn ensemble playing without struggling with exact notes.
But his work is still mostly in pencil on paper form.
See the video:
This is the horn & swam ensemble recording of movement one. 2 flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 1 timpani, 16, violins, 7, violas, 5 celli and 3 double basses are in the performance.
