Opus 219
Sextet No. 3
for Oboe, Horn and String Quartet
The movements each have different titles:
I: The Rockies (3:08)
II: Hexagonal (1:15)
III: Snap Shot (0:45)
IV. The Happy Wanderer (4:33)
Written in 2015, I had been thinking about this for quite a while. The 3rd movement was written in June, the first movement was written on my travels to British Columbia, Canada in August. This trip was the main inspiration for the work.
Movement 1: This work is in a new form for me with rising keys through it. I start in D. It is a work that starts with a theoretical idea and moves more and more to melodic.
Movement 2: I started with a chord or melody D – F# - A – C# - F, and expanded it to intervals of M3, m3, M3.
Movement 3: The Snap Shot is just a little ditty that I wrote in Grass Valley this Summer.
Movement 4: was begun in Regina on October 25, 2015 just after I completed the Little Symphony” Op. 223. A great deal of movement four was written in the RSO Run-out to Swift Current for a concert with Counter-Tenor Terry Barber.
Completed Nov. 17, 2015
