I wrote my first piece of music in December 1976. It was around 5 p.m. on the twenty-first. I was fifteen years old and practicing horn in my room. I improvised a nice melody and wrote it down; it became a full piece quite quickly and I went down and played it for my mother, who had a masters degree in music composition, and Evelyn Rorem, the cousin of composer Ned Rorem who was visiting.
