Program Notes:

"This recoding is nice versions of classical music arranged for a horn ensemble; some natural horns and some modern valve horn . . Beethoven is always great!"

When I was recording CD65 Natural Horn Music Beethoven, Reicha & Hertel I also did a version where I played the oboe and bassoon parts on horn.

This recording has been in process for about two years; it's music I love, and I very happy to finally make it available.

This CD is recorded at A=432 hertz.

Ludwig van Beethoven wrote this quintet for oboe, three natural horns and bassoon in 1793, a final edition was completed 1862 by Leopold Zellner. Other reviewers say all the music is original to Beethoven.

The Reicha trios for two natural horns and bassoon seems to be a very hard piece of music to find. The trios for 3 horns op, 82 are very popular, and these should be too. Reicha is a great composer.

Johann Wilhelm Hertel (1727 – 1789) who wrote this quartet for two natural horns two bassoons was a German composer, harpsichord and violin player.

He was born in Eisenach and moved to the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, where he was court composer during the reign of Duke Christian Ludwig II, Hertel wrote primarily instrumental music, then in the reign of his successor, Mecklenburg-Schwerin" Frederick II (called 'the pious') he focused on sacred music. In 1770 he was appointed court counselor and served also as private secretary to princess Ulrike.

Hertel wrote a great number of symphonies, solo concertos, harpsichord sonatas, songs, hymns, cantatas, and oratorios. Much of his work is in the gallant style, transitional between Baroque and Classical, and he is considered an important representative of the 'emotional style' of the German pre-Classical era.
