Just after I won the fourth horn job (full-time) for Sacramento Symphony. I was scheduled to play the composers showcase concert at Trinity Chamber Concerts, but since I had to rush off to a full-time job, Janis Lieberman, horn and Randall Keith, bass played the premiere of the third movement.

George Weiss (cello) and Richard Burdick have performed a couple of these movements:
           Berkeley & Davis March 6th & 7th 1999
           Chico on May 16, 1999
           Covell Gardens May 1999

No full performance of this work has taken place.

This work is from a time when I was interested in hearing sustained chords and there interference beats, I know that this sort of thing doesn't make the best “music” but the exploration of sound has been an important aspect of my desire to write “Music”

This work is in five long movements, with a number of repeats that most likely would not be taken.

Each movement is based on a paragraph of the following poem, and it is suggested that the poem be read in between the movements

Were there such as stillness, still I'd be
Flee the whirling cosmos quietly.

Piece by piece the fragments fall;
Broken image, shattered thrall.
Ever the wreckers' blows resound;
Ever the formless self unfound.

Serene upon the tide——
Strange traveler--—I do not hide
My face from angry foam;
The breaking wave my only home.

What hidden waves wash unbeknown
Upon the inner shores of man!
Of Sprit's inland seas, they reach
Across the intervening span
That links each island sapience
To realms beyond the sun,
Where separate horizons fade
And land and sea are One.

A holy fountain rises here,
To bless earth's caravan.
It's source is neither far nor near
Nor river known of man.
The traveler has but to lift
His parched face unto its pelt,
And, though the dust lies deeply drift,
Its cooling touch is felt.

The complete work is 27 minute long.
